On this day July 7 in 1960 – With ‘Good Timin”Jimmy Jones hit No.1 on the UK Singles chart for the first of three consecutive weeks.

1962 – Pianist, composer, songwriter and orchestra leader David Rose topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with the instrumental song ‘The Stripper’.

1966 – Rock band The Kinks reached number one in the UK with ‘Sunny Afternoon’ on this day July 7 in music history. The song was also a chart-topper in Canada, Ireland, Norway, and the Netherlands that year.

1967 – The Beatles released ‘All You Need Is Love’ as a non-album single. The song reached number one in eleven countries worldwide that year.

1969 – John Lennon released the anti-war song ‘Give Peace a Chance’ on this day July 7 in the US. It peaked at No.14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached No.2 in the UK, and it also became the anthem of the anti-war movement in America during the 1970s.

1973 – Billy Preston went to number one on the US Singles chart with ‘Will It Go Round in Circles’ for the first of two weeks straight.

1979 – Donna Summer returned for a five-week run at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart with her seventh studio album ‘Bad Girls’ on this day July 7. She originally topped the chart on June 16.

1980 – Led Zeppelin finished their European tour with a show in Berlin, Germany. Unfortunately, this was the band’s last concert as drummer John Bonham-Bonzo died two months later in September.

1984 – Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Prince started a five-week run at number one on the US Billboard 100 chart with ‘When Doves Cry’.

1990 – MC Hammer returned for an eighteen-week run at number one in the US on this day July 7 with his third studio album ‘Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em’. He previously topped the chart for three weeks starting June 9.

1993 – American singer Mia Zapata was murdered on her way home after a show, aged 27. Best remembered as the lead vocalist of the punk band The Gits.

2001 – American folk singer-songwriter and guitar player Fred Neil died on this day July 7 at the age of 65. Best remembered for writing ‘Everybody’s Talkin” which was a hit for Harry Nilsson.

2001 – The number one single in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘The Way To Your Love’ by the pop group Hear’Say.

2001 – Hip hop group D12 topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their debut studio album ‘Devil’s Night’ on this day July 7 in music history.

2006 – English singer, songwriter and guitarist Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett died on this day July 7, aged 60 from pancreatic cancer. Best remembered as the co-founder and original frontman of the rock band Pink Floyd.

2007 – With their tenth studio album ‘Lost Highway’, rock band Bon Jovi reached number one in the US. The album was an international hit that year and it topped the charts in eight countries.

2007 – Indie rock band the Editors went to number one in the UK on this day July 7 with their second studio album ‘An End Has a Start’.

2012 – With ‘This is Love’, rapper and record producer will.i.am featuring singer Eva Simons topped the UK Singles chart.

2012 – Teen idol Justin Bieber topped the US Billboard 200 chart with his third studio album ‘Believe’ on this day July 7 in music history.

2012 – Rock band Linkin Park topped the UK Albums chart with their fifth studio LP ‘Living Things’. The album hit No.1 in seventeen countries that year making it their best charting release.

1924 – American vocalist and guitarist Colleen Summers also known professionally as Mary Ford was born in El Monte, California. She rose to fame as one half of the husband-and-wife musical duo Les Paul and Mary Ford.

1932 – Jazz keyboardist and composer Josef “Joe” Zawinul was born in Vienna, Austria on this day July 7. He is considered a pioneer of the jazz fusion genre and is known for co-founding the groups Weather Report, and The Zawinul Syndicate.

1933 – Canadian singer and songwriter Barry Authors also known professionally as J. J. Barrie was born in Oshawa, Ontario. Best known for his chart-topping rendition of the country music song ‘No Charge’.

1940 – English drummer, singer, songwriter and actor Richard Starkey better known as Ringo Starr was born on this day July 7 in Liverpool. Best known as a member of The Beatles.

1941 – Bass guitarist James “Jim” Rodford was born in St Albans, England. Best known for playing with bands such as Argent, The Kings, and Zombies.
