On this day September 9 in 1956 – Elvis Presley appeared for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show where he performed several songs.

1957 – Aged 16, Paul Anka was at number one on multiple US Singles charts with ‘Diana’. He also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK that year with the song.

1965 – The Rolling Stones scored their fourth number one single in the UK with ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ on this day September 9. The song was an international hit that year and it topped the charts in eleven other countries, including the US.

1971 – John Lennon released his second solo studio album ‘Imagine’ on Apple Records. The album was a commercial success and it peaked at number one in Australia, the Netherlands, Japan, Norway, the UK, and North America.

1972 – Rock band Slade started a three-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’ on this day September 9 in music history.

1978 – With ‘Boogie Oogie Oogie’A Taste of Honey started a three-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also a chart-topper in Canada and a Top 3 hit in the UK and New Zealand.

1978 – Euro-Caribbean group Boney M. topped the UK Albums chart with their third studio release ‘Nightflight to Venus’. The album also reached No.1 in Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, and it features two of their biggest hits ‘Rivers of Babylon’ and ‘Rasputin’.

1982 – Canadian rock band Rush released their ninth studio album ‘Signals’ on this day September 9 through Anthem Records. It became a chart-topper in Canada while in the UK it peaked at No.3 and in reached No.10 in the US.

1989 – Italian house music group Black Box started a six-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Ride on Time’.

1989 – Boy band New Kids on the Block topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their breakthrough second studio album ‘Hangin’ Tough’. They were also at No.1 on the Pop Singles chart with the title-track on this day September 9. This was their second No.1 of the year as they topped the Hot 100 chart with ‘I’ll Be Loving You (Forever)’ on June 17.

1990 – Rapper Coolio featuring L.V. topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ on this day September 9 in music history. The song featured in the 1995 film ‘Dangerous Minds’ starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and it also won the rapper a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

1990 – Singer and songwriter Neil Young released his eighteenth studio album ‘Ragged Glory’ through Reprise Records. It peaked at No.31 in America.

1995 – With ‘You Are Not Alone’Michael Jackson topped the UK Singles chart. The single also topped the charts in twelve other countries, including the US.

1995 – Alternative rock band The Charlatans reached number one in the UK with their self-titled fourth studio album on this day September 9.

1996 – American singer-songwriter and mandolinist William “Bill” Monroe nicknamed the ‘Father of Bluegrass’ died at the age of 84.

2000 – Boy band A1 topped the UK Singles chart on this day September 9 with their rendition of the 1984 worldwide hit song ‘Take On Me’ by A-ha.

2000 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day was Robbie Williams‘ third solo studio album ‘Sing When You’re Winning’. It topped the chart for three consecutive weeks.

2006 – With their self-titled debut studio album, girl group Danity Kane went to number one in the US on this day September 9.

2006 – Rock band Kasabian scored their first number one album in the UK with their second studio release ‘Empire’.

2007 – Guitarist, singer, songwriter, and founding member of the rock band OutlawsHughie Thomasson died on this day September 9 in music history, aged 55. Also known for his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

2014 – Scottish multi-instrumentalist Robert “Throb” Young died at the age of 49. Best known as a member of the alternative rock band Primal Scream from 1984 until 2006.

2017 – Rock band Brand New scored their first and only No.1 in the US with their fifth and final studio album ‘Science Fiction’.

2020 – Singer-songwriter, arranger, composer, producer and co-founder of the band Kool & the GangRonald Bell also known as Khalis Bayyan died on this day September 9, aged 68.

2021 – American rapper Kanye West topped the UK Albums chart with ‘Donda’ on this day September 9. The album was a worldwide hit and it went to No.1 in eighteen countries.
