On this day May 28 in 1964 – English singer Cilla Black scored her second number one single of the year in the UK with ‘You’re My World’. She previously topped the Singles chart with ‘Anyone Who Had a Heart’ on 27 February.
1966 – With their sixth studio album ‘What Now My Love’, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass went to number one on the US Billboard 200 for the first of eight consecutive weeks. This was the group’s third chart-topper of the year. They previously topped the chart for several weeks with ‘Whipped Cream and Other Delights’ and ‘Going Places’.
1966 – Percy Sledge started a two-week stint at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘When A Man Loves A Woman’ on this day May 28 in music history. Michael Bolton‘s rendition of the song was also a No.1 hit in 1991.
1975 – The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded The Doobie Brothers a Gold Plaque for their fifth studio album ‘Stampede’ which sold over 500,000 units.
1976 – The Allman Brothers Band disbanded after Gregg Allman testified against security man Scooter Herring who faced charges for drug trafficking. This resulted in a 75 year prison sentence for Scooter. Gregg was labeled a snitch and the band broke up. However, the group reunited two years later in 1978 and continued playing for years to come.
1981 – Hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five opened for The Clash at Times Square in New York on this day May 28. However, the audience did not appreciate their act and booed the rappers offstage, even assaulted them. In 2007, the group became the first hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
1983 – Irene Cara started a six-week stint at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Flashdance… What a Feeling’. The song featured in the romantic drama movie ‘Flashdance’.
1983 – With their debut single ‘Candy Girl’, R&B/pop group New Edition hit number one on the UK Singles chart on this day May 28.
1988 – George Michael scored his third number one single of the year in the US with ‘One More Try’. He previously topped the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Faith’ in January and ‘Father Figure’ in February.
1994 – With their sixth studio release ‘I Say I Say I Say’, synthpop duo Erasure topped the UK Albums chart on this day May 28 in music history.
1996 – Depeche Mode‘s lead singer Dave Gahan suffered a cardiac arrest after overdosing on cocaine and heroin. Fortunately, the medics managed to arrive in time and save his life.
2005 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day May 28 was ‘Forever Faithless – The Greatest Hits’ by the electronic dance music band Faithless.
2005 – Rock band Oasis scored their first No.1 single of the year in the UK with ‘Lyla’. They topped the Singles chart again few months later on September 3 with ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ which proved to be the band’s eighth and last chart-topper.
2005 – With their sixth studio album ‘Stand Up’, Dave Matthews Band topped the US Billboard 200 on this day May 28 in music history. It was their fourth No.1 on the chart.
2008 – American guitarist and session musician Jerald Edward Kolbrak better known as Jerry Cole died of a heart attack on this day May 28 at the age of 68.
2011 – With ‘Give Me Everything’, Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer hit No.1 on the UK Singles chart for the first of three consecutive weeks.
2022 – Rapper Kendrick Lamar went to No.1 in the US with his fifth studio album ‘Mr.Morale & the Big Steppers’ .

1910 – Blues singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader Thibeaux T-Bone Walker was born in Linden, Texas. He is considered a pioneer and innovator of the electric and jump blues sound.
1917 – American multi-genre violinist Papa John Creach was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Best known for his work with Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and others.
1931 – Rockabilly guitarist and singer Albert “Sonny” Burgess was born in Newport, Arkansas.
1944 – American singer Gladys Knight nicknamed the “Empress of Soul” was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Best known for chart-topping singles such as ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ and ‘That’s What Friends Are For’. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
1944 – Singer-songwriter, author and music historian Billy Vera was born in Riverside, California. Best known as the frontman of Billy Vera & the Beaters who had the No.1 hit ‘At This Moment’.
1945 – American singer-songwriter and guitarist John Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California. He came to fame as the founder and frontman of the rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival.
1949 – Lead singer of the punk rock band Plasmatics, Wendy O. Williams was born in Webster, New York.
1959 – Welsh pop singer Stephen Harrington also known professionally as Steve Strange was born in Newbridge. He came to prominence as the leader of the new wave band Visage.
1962 – British singer and songwriter Roland Lee Gift was born in Birmingham. Best known as the frontman of the pop rock band Fine Young Cannibals.
1968 – Australian singer, songwriter and actress Kylie Minogue was born in Melbourne. Best known for hit songs such as ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’, ‘Slow’, ‘Got to Be Certain’, etc.
1970 – English drummer Mark Richardson was born in Leeds. Best known as a member of the bands Skunk Anansie, Little Angels and Feeder.
1980 – Irish singer and songwriter Markus Feehily was born in Sligo. He came to prominence as a member of the boy band Westlife.
1983 – Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Patrick James Grossi better known as Active Child was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
