On this day June 14 in 1967 – The Monkees recorded ‘Daydream Believer’. It was released as a single on October 25 and it became a chart-topper in the US, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, and Canada.
1967 – The Beatles began recording ‘All You Need Is Love’. It was released as a non-album single on July 7 and it went to number one in eleven countries worldwide.
1969 – American blues singer and guitarist Wynonie Harris died on this day June 14 in music history, aged 53 from cancer. Best remembered for scoring sixteen Top 10 singles on the R&B and Pop charts, including ‘Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well’, ‘Good Rocking Tonight’, ‘All She Wants to Do Is Rock’, etc.
1971 – Progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer released their second studio album ‘Tarkus’ through Island Records. It topped the UK and Italian Albums charts and was a Top 10 hit in six other countries.
1975 – Rock band America scored their second number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 on this day June 14 with ‘Sister Golden Hair’.
1980 – With his seventh studio album ‘Glass Houses’, singer-songwriter Billy Joel hit No.1 on the Billboard 200 for the first of six consecutive weeks.
1980 – Singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel topped the UK Albums chart for the first time as a solo artist on this day June 14 with his self-titled third studio album.
1986 – With the duet song ‘On My Own’, Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald started a three-week stint at number one in the US. A chart-topper in Canada, Ireland and the Netherlands as well, while in the UK it peaked at No.2.
1986 – Rock band Queen went to number one in the UK on this day June 14 in music history with their twelfth studio album ‘A Kind of Magic’.
1989 – English drummer and record producer Pete de Freitas died at the age of 27 in a motorcycle accident. Best remembered for his work with the rock band Echo & the Bunnymen.
1994 – American composer, conductor and multi-instrumentalist Enrico Nicola Mancini better know professionally as Henry Mancini died on this day June 14, aged 70. Best remembered for composing iconic film scores such as the music for ‘The Pink Panther’ movies, the ‘Peter Gunn’ TV series and ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ among many others.
1995 – Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist Rory Gallagher died at the age of 47 from liver failure. Best remembered for forming the blues rock group Taste and for his eminent solo career.
1997 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day June 14 was ‘Wu-Tang Forever’ by the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.
1997 – Puff Daddy and Faith Evans ft. 112 hit No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the tribute song ‘I’ll Be Missing You’ in memory of the late Biggie Smalls for the first of eleven consecutive weeks. The song was a big international hit and reached the top spot in sixteen other countries.
2003 – Led Zeppelin topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their triple live album ‘How the West Was Won’ on this day June 14. The album features performances from the band’s 1972 US tour.

2008 – Electronic music producer Mint Royale topped the UK Singles chart with a remixed version of the 1929 song ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ on this day June 14.

1909 – American singer, guitarist and actor Burl Ives was born in Hunt City, Illinois. Best known for the hit singles ‘A Little Bitty Tear’ and ‘Funny Way of Laughin”.
1931 – Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Autry DeWalt Mixon also known professionally as Junior Walker was born in Blytheville, Arkansas.
1936 – American soul and R&B singer-songwriter Renaldo “Obie” Benson was born in Detroit, Michigan. Best known as a founding member of the Four Tops.
1937 – American jazz double bassist Charles “Chuck” Berghofer was born in Denver, Colorado.
1943 – Songwriter, keyboardist and session musician Lindon “Spooner” Oldham was born in Center Star, Alabama. Best known as a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.
1945 – Keyboardist, singer, songwriter, composer and producer Rodney Argent was born in St Albans, England. He rose to fame as the founder and leader of the rock band Zombies.
1947 – American guitarist Barry “The Fish” Melton was born in Brooklyn, New York. Best known as a co-founder of the bands The Dinosaurs and Country Joe and the Fish.
1949 – English drummer Alan White was born in Pelton. Best known for playing almost 50 years with the progressive rock band Yes.
1949 – English multi-instrumentalist and vocalist James “Jim” Lea was born in Wolverhampton. He came to prominence as a founding member of the rock band Slade.
1958 – English singer, songwriter and producer Nicholas Eede also known professionally as Nick Van Eede was born in Cuckfield. Best known as a founding member of Cutting Crew and for writing the band’s biggest hit ‘(I Just) Died in Your Arms’.
1961 – Singer and songwriter Boy George was born George O’Dowd in Barnehurst, England. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the new wave band Culture Club.
1963 – American guitarist and songwriter Chris DeGarmo was born in Wenatchee, Washington. Best known as a founding member of the progressive metal band Queensryche.
1971 -Singer and songwriter Billie Myers was born in Coventry, England on this day June 14 in music history. Best known for her 1997 international hit single ‘Kiss the Rain’.
