On this day October 18 in 1957 – Paul McCartney played his first live gig with John Lennon‘s band The Quarry Men at the New Cubmoor Hall in Liverpool. The band later became known as The Beatles.
1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their live debut at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, France. They were the supporting act for Johnny Hallyday.
1969 – The Temptations scored their second number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘I Can’t Get Next to You’.
1969 – With his rendition of Burt Bacharach and Hal David‘s song ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’, Bobbie Gentry topped the UK Singles chart.
1974 – The Rolling Stones released their fourteenth studio album ‘It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll’ through their own record label. The album wasn’t as commercially successful as its predecessors but it still peaked at No.1 in the US and reached No.2 in the UK.
1975 – Country music singer-songwriter John Denver topped the US Billboard 200 chart with his ninth studio album ‘Windsong’.
1986 – With their fourth studio album ‘Fore!’, Huey Lewis and the News went to number one in the US. The album also topped the national charts in Canada, Japan, and New Zealand, and it features the hit singles ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ and ‘Stuck with You’.
1986 – English actor and singer Nick Berry started a four-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Every Loser Wins’.
1994 – Influential American tenor saxophonist Lee Francis Allen died at the age of 67.
1997 – 15-year-old country music singer and songwriter LeAnn Rimes returned to No.1 on the US Albums chart with ‘You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs’.
2000 – American singer and actress Julie London died at the age of 74. Best remembered for her rendition of ‘Cry Me a River’ which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
2008 – With their seventh and final studio album ‘Dig Out Your Soul’, rock band Oasis went to number one in the UK. It also topped the Scottish and Italian album charts that year.
2008 – American soul singer Delia Juanita Warwick better known as Dee Dee Warwick died at the age of 66.
2008 – Rapper T.I. featuring Rihanna replaced his chart-topping single ‘Whatever You Like’ with ‘Live Your Life’ at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also climbed to No.1 on the Billboard 200 with his sixth studio album ‘Paper Trail’ on this day.
2013 – American rockabilly guitarist and record producer Roland Janes died at the age of 80.
2014 – With his ninth studio album ‘Bringing Back the Sunshine’, country music singer Blake Shelton went to No.1 in the US.
2018 – British rapper Dave featuring Fredo scored his first number one single in the United Kingdom with ‘Funky Friday’.
2018 – The soundtrack album ‘A Star Is Born’ to the film of the same name starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper reached number one in the UK. Just like the movie, the album was a hit worldwide as well it topped the national charts in 20 other countries.
