While this may not surprise those familiar with the Italian language – Dio means God.
However, this has nothing to do with Ronnie considering himself a “God” and having a super inflated ego. Not at all. He chose the “Dio” moniker because he thought his surname Padavona was too long and not attractive enough for the public.
The sobriquet was also based on the notorious mafia boss Johnny Dio at the time.
8. He Despised Drugs
Detest towards illegal substances isn’t something uncommon in the normal world, but things can be a bit different in the music industry, especially when it comes to (sex, drugs &) rock and roll.

In the early 1970s, Dio’s band began opening for Deep Purple and that’s how the connection with Ritchie Blackmore was made. It didn’t take long before Blackmore left his band due to creative differences and formed Rainbow together with Ronnie James Dio and his buddies.

However, due to disagreements with Tony Iommi, Ronnie left Black Sabbath two years later and formed a new band called Dio. The new band underwent several lineup changes but it always consisted of Ronnie James Dio as the frontman.
