On this day October 29 in 1965 – Rock band The Who released ‘My Generation’ in the UK where it peaked at No.2 on the Singles chart.
1966 – Garage rock band ? and the Mysteries hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ’96 Tears’. Also a chart-topper in Canada that year.
1971 – Co-founder, guitarist and leader of the Allman Brothers Band, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident, aged 24.
1973 – John Lennon released his fourth studio album ‘Mind Games’ through Apple Records. The album received mixed reviews but it still made the Top 10 in the US (No.9) and peaked at No.13 in the UK.
1977 – The Spanish vocal duo Baccara reached number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’. The song was a big hit in Europe and it topped the charts in nine other countries on the old continent.
1983 – Country musicians Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton hit number one in the US with ‘Islands in the Stream’ for the first of two consecutive weeks. It also reached No.1 in Australia, Austria, and Canada.
1984 – Hard rock band Deep Purple released their eleventh studio album ‘Perfect Strangers’ through Polydor Records. The album was a commercial success peaking at No. 17 in the US and No.6 in the UK while in Switzerland it reached No.1.
1987 – American jazz multi-instrumentalist, singer, and big band leader Woodrow “Woody” Herman died at the age of 74.
1988 – With their greatest hits compilation album ‘Money for Nothing’, Dire Straits started a three-week run at No.1 in the UK.
1988 – Irish singer-songwriter Enya hit number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Orinoco Flow’ for the first of three consecutive weeks.

2020 – With ‘Lemonade’, the hip hop collective Internet Money ft. rappers Gunna, Don Toliver and Nav topped the UK Singles chart.

1945 – American singer and actress Beatrice Melba Hill also known by her stage name Melba Moore was born in New York City.
