On this day October 22 in 1961 – Chubby Checker appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and performed ‘The Twist’ and ‘Let’s Twist Again’.
1964 – Sandie Shaw started a three-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me’.
1966 – The Supremes hit number one on the US Billboard 200 for the first of two weeks with their ninth studio album ‘The Supremes A’ Go-Go’. The album features the chart-topping single ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’.
1976 – The Damned became the first punk band to release a single when ‘New Rose’ entered the stores.
1976 – Bob Seger released his ninth and breakthrough studio album ‘Night Moves’ through Capitol Records. The album went on to sell over 6 million copies and it peaked at No.8 in the US. It’s also the first album to credit his backing group the Silver Bullet Band.
1983 – New wave group Culture Club reached number one in the UK for the first of three consecutive weeks with their second studio album ‘Colour by Numbers’. The album features the band’s signature song ‘Karma Chameleon’ which was a worldwide hit.
1986 – American musician, actress, and comedian Jane Dornacker died at the age of 39 in a helicopter crash. Best remembered for her work with the rock band The Tubes.
1988 – With his rendition of ‘A Groovy Kind of Love’, Phil Collins started a two-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song featured in the film ‘Buster’ in which Collins starred and it became a chart-topper in nine other countries that year.
1988 – Irish rock band U2 went to number one in the UK with their album ‘Rattle and Hum’ which is a mix of live and studio recordings.
1989 – Folk music singer-songwriter James Henry Miller also known professionally as Ewan MacColl died at the age of 74. Best remembered for writing songs such as ‘Dirty Old Town’ and ‘The First Time Ever I Say Your Face’.
1994 – With their second greatest hits compilation ‘Cross Road’, Bon Jovi topped the UK Albums chart.
2002 – The Foo Fighters released their fourth studio album ‘One By One’. The album sold over 1 million copies in the US alone and it topped the charts in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. It also earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
2005 – Rock band Nickelback topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their fifth studio album ‘All the Right Reasons’. The album also reached No.1 in Canada and New Zealand.
2005 – Girl group Sugababes scored their first domestic number one album when ‘Taller in More Ways’ peaked atop the UK Albums chart.
2011 – The debut studio album ‘Clear as Day’ by the American Idol winner Scotty McCreery was at number one in the United States.

2015 – Electronic music group Faithless scored their third number one on the UK Albums chart with their sixth remix album ‘Faithless 2.0’.
2016 – With his third studio album ‘A Seat at the Table’, singer and songwriter Solange went to number one in the US.
2017 – Australian musician, record producer, and songwriter George Young died at age 70. Best remembered for co-founding the bands Easybeats and Flash and the Pan. He was the older brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC.
2017 – American musician and co-founder of Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, Scott Putesky also known by his stage name Daisy Berkowitz died at the age of 49 from cancer.
2020 – British rapper Headie One went to number one in the United Kingdom with his debut studio album ‘Edna’.
2021 – American musician Jay Black died on this day at the age of 82. Best remembered as the lead singer of the rock band Jay and the Americans.

1942 – Singer-songwriter and guitarist Robert “Bobby” Fuller was born in Baytown, Texas. Best known as the frontman of the rock band The Bobby Fuller Four that hat the hit songs ‘Let Her Dance’ and ‘I Fought the Law’.
1945 – Guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Leslie West was born Leslie Abel Weinstein in New York City. He came to prominence as a founding member of the hard rock band Mountain.
1945 – Singer-songwriter and co-founder of the rock band The Young Rascals, Edward “Eddie” Brigati was born in Garfield, New Jersey.
