On this day November 3 1951 – Tony Bennet had the best selling single in the United States with ‘Cold, Cold Heart’.

1956 – Elvis Presley started a five-week run at number one on the US Singles chart with ‘Love Me Tender’ / ‘Any Way You Want Me’.

1960 – Four years later on the same date, Elvis Presley started an eight-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart with ‘It’s Now or Never’.

1962 – With ‘He’s a Rebel’, vocal group The Crystals hit No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first of two consecutive weeks. It also became a chart-topper in Canada and New Zealand.

1973 – David Bowie started a five-week stint at number one on the UK Albums chart with his seventh studio LP ‘Pin Ups’.

1979 – Rock band the Eagles started a nine-week run at number one on the US Billboard 200 with their sixth studio album ‘The Long Run’. The album also peaked at No.1 in Australia, Japan, Canada, and Sweden.

1979 – The new wave/synth-pop project by musician Robin Scott topped the US Singles chart with ‘Pop Muzik’. It reached No.1 in Australia, Canada, Denmark, South Africa, Sweden, and Switzerland as well, while in the UK it peaked at No.2.

1984 – Paul McCartney reached No.1 in the UK with his fifth solo studio album ‘Give My Regards to Broad Street’ that was also the soundtrack to the musical film of the same name in which he starred alongside Ringo Starr.

1984 – With ‘Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)’Billy Ocean went to number one in the US. The song also reached No.1 in Canada and New Zealand, and it won him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

1990 – Two weeks after their rendition of ‘Unchained Melody’ was reissued in the UK, the Righteous Brothers started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart. The song was originally released in 1965.

1990 – Vanilla Ice became the first rapper to top the US Billboard Hot 100 when ‘Ice Ice Baby’ hit number one on the chart.

1992 – Rock band Bon Jovi released ‘Keep the Faith’ through Mercury Records, their fifth studio album and last to feature all founding members. It went on to top the album charts in the UK, Finland, and Australia, in the US peaked at No.5.

1993 – Russian inventor Leon Theremin died at the age of 97. Best remembered for inventing one of the first electronic musical instruments – the theremin.

1998 – Canadian singer Alanis Morissette released her fourth studio album ‘Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie’. The album was a commercial success and it topped the charts in the US, Switzerland, Norway, Germany, and New Zealand.

2001 – Singer Mary J. Blige started a six-week run at number one in the United States with ‘Family Affair’. Her first No.1 on the Hot 100 chart.

2002 – The “King of Skiffle” – Anthony James Donegan better known by his stage name Lonnie Donegan died at age 71.

2001 – The charity album for the benefit of the Twin Towers Fund released by Columbia Records titled ‘God Bless America’ reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.

2007 – Indie pop rock band The Hoosiers topped the UK Albums chart with their debut studio LP ‘The Trick to Life’.

2007 – With ‘Bleeding Love’Leona Lewis hit No.1 on the UK Singles chart for the first of seven consecutive weeks. The song peaked at No.1 in 35 countries and it was the best-selling single worldwide in 2008.

2012 – Country music singer and songwriter Jason Aldean topped the US Albums chart with his fifth studio LP ‘Night Train’.

2012 – With her fourth studio album ‘Red’, American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift went to number one in the UK.

2012 – The number one single in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ by Labrinth and Emeli Sande.

2017 – The compilation album ‘The Wonder of You’ by Elvis Presley debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums chart.

2024 – American producer, arranger, songwriter, and composer Quincy Jones died at the age of 91. Best remembered for his work with artists such as Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Donna Summer, Count Basie, etc, and for composing numerous award-winning film scores and soundtracks.

1930 – American blues and gospel vocalist Mable John was born in Bastrop, Louisiana.

1933 – British conductor and composer of film scores John Barry was born in York, England. Best known for composing the scores for eleven James Bond films and also the Oscar-winning film scores for ‘Out of Africa’ and ‘Dances with Wolves’.

1943 – Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and founding member of the folk-jazz band Pentangle, Herbert “Bert” Jansch was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

1944 – Founding member and keyboardist of the psychedelic rock band The Lemon Pipers, Robert “Bob” Nave was born on in Dayton, Ohio.

1945 – British bass guitarist Nicholas “Nick” Simper was born in Norwood Green, England. He came to prominence as a co-founding member of the hard rock band Deep Purple.

1948 – Singer and actress Marie Lawrie also known as Lulu Kennedy-Cairns was born in Lennoxtown.

1954 – Singer and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Leslie Goddard also known professionally as Adam Ant was born in London. Best known as the frontman of the band Adam and the Ants.

1960 – Singer-songwriter, guitarist and keyboards player Ian McNabb was born in Liverpool, England. Best known as the co-founder and frontman of the alternative rock band The Icicle Works.

1969 – Italian DJ, composer, and record producer Roberto Concina better known by his stage name Robert Miles was born in Fleurier, Switzerland. Best known for his multi-million selling and worldwide hit song ‘Children’.

1973 – American guitarist and longtime member of the heavy metal band SlipknotMick Thomson was born in Des Moines, Iowa.
