On this day November 1 in 1957 – The Crickets led by Buddy Holly topped the UK Singles chart with ‘That’ll Be the Day’.
1968 – George Harrison became the first Beatle to release a solo album when Apple Records issued his debut studio LP ‘Wonderwall Music’.
1969 – Elvis Presley scored his eighteenth and last number one single in the US when ‘Suspicious Minds’ rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
1969 – With their eleventh studio album ‘Abbey Road’, The Beatles started an eight-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard 200. The album was a worldwide hit and it topped the charts in ten other countries, including the UK, Canada, and Australia.
1971 – Singer-songwriter and actress Olivia Newton-John released her debut studio album ‘If Not for You’ through Festival Records.
1975 – Elton John scored his third number one single of the year in the US when ‘Island Girl’ started a three-week run at No.1 on the Hot 100. He previously topped the chart with ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ and ‘Philadelphia Freedom’ in January and April.
1986 – With their third studio album ‘Third Stage’, rock band Boston hit number one on the US Billboard 200 for the first of four consecutive weeks.

1990 – American bassist, guitar player and session musician Merlyn Ray Pohlman died at the age of 60.
1994 – Nirvana released their live album ‘MTV Unplugged in New York’ through DGC Records. The album was a commercial success and it went on to top the national charts in ten countries worldwide, including the UK, Canada and the US.
1997 – Eurodance group Aqua started a four-week stint at the top of the UK Singles chart with ‘Barbie Girl’.
2003 – American singer Clay Aiken started a two-week stint at number one on the US Albums chart with his debut LP ‘Measure of a Man’.
2003 – The number one single in the UK on this day was ‘Be Faithful’ by the American rapper Fatman Scoop featuring the hip hop duo Crooklyn Clan.
2005 – American composer, pianist, and conductor Lyle Russel “Sketch” Henderson died at the age of 87.

2014 – British singer-songwriter Ben Howard scored his first domestic number one album with ‘I Forget Where We Were’.
2014 – Country music duo Florida Georgia Line reached number one on the US Albums chart with their second studio LP ‘Anything Goes’.
2018 – With ‘Shallow’, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper hit number one on the UK Singles chart for the first of two consecutive weeks. They also topped the UK Albums chart on this day with the soundtrack album to the musical film ‘A Star Is Born’ in which both starred.

1945 – British musician Richard Grechko also known professionally as Ric Greach was born in Leicester, England. Best known for his work with bands such as Blind Faith, Family, and Traffic.
1947 – English guitarist Robert “Bob” Weston was born in Plymouth, Devon. He came to prominence as a member of Fleetwood Mac.
1947 – American record producer, composer, and lyricist James “Jim” Steinman was born in Hewlett, New York. Best known for his work with Bonnie Tyler and Meta Loaf.
