On this day May 13 in 1955 – With his version of ‘Stranger in Paradise’, Tony Bennet reached number one on the UK Singles chart.
1965 – Country music singer and songwriter Roger Miller scored his first and only No.1 single in the UK with ‘King of the Road’.
1966 – The Rolling Stones released ‘Paint it Black’ in the UK on this day May 13 in music history. The song topped the charts in the UK, US, Canada and the Netherlands and is also one of the first Rock records to feature a sitar.
1967 – With their second studio release ‘More of the Monkees’, pop rock group The Monkees topped the UK Albums chart.
1967 – Girl group The Supremes scored their tenth number one single in the US with ‘The Happening’ on this day May 13.
1971 – Jefferson Airplane‘s lead singer Grace Slick suffered severe injuries when she crashed her car into the inside of a tunnel in San Francisco while drag racing Jorma Kaukonen. She was hospitalized, but thankfully made a full recovery.
1975 – American western swing singer, songwriter, fiddle player and bandleader Robert ‘Bob’ Wills died on this day May 13, aged 70 from pneumonia. Best remembered for hit songs such as ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Stars and Stripes on Iwo Jima’, ‘Sugar Moon’, and ‘New Spanish Two Step’ among others.
1978 – Singer Yvonne Elliman topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with her rendition of the Bee Gees‘ disco song ‘If I Can’t Have You’. Interestingly, she dethroned the Bee Gees from No.1 who topped the chart for eight weeks with ‘Night Fever’.
1978 – With ‘Rivers of Babylon’ / ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’, vocal group Boney M topped the UK Singles chart on this day May 13 in music history. It held the top spot for five consecutive weeks.
1981 – American pop music singer Joan Weber died from heart failure, aged 45. Best remembered for her 1955 hit rendition of the song ‘Let Me Go, Lover’.
1988 – American jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker was found dead on the streets of Amsterdam on this day May 13, aged 58. Apparently he fell from the second floor window of his hotel room after getting high on heroin and cocaine.
1989 – With ‘I’ll Be There for You’, rock band Bon Jovi scored their fourth number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
