On this day July 9 in 1955 – Bill Haley & His Comets topped the Billboard Pop chart with ‘Rock Around The Clock’. The song announced the upcoming rock and roll era.

1964 – With their rendition of ‘The House of the Rising Sun’The Animals topped the UK Singles chart. The song reached No.1 in the US, Canada, Finland, and Spain as well.

1966 – The Beatles returned to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Paperback Writer’ on this day July 9 in music history. The song was a chart-topper in eight other countries that year, including the UK.

1977 – With ‘Undercover Angel’Alan O’Day topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also a chart-topper in Canada that year.

1983 –  New wave band The Police started an eight-week stint at number one on the US Singles chart with ‘Every Breath You Take’ on this day July 9.

1983 – Michael Jackson returned for a two-week run at number one in the US with his sixth studio album ‘Thriller’. The LP won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards and became the best-selling album of all time with over 70 million copies sold worldwide.

2020 – The number one single in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)’ by music producer Jawsh 685 and singer Jason Derulo. It held the top spot for three weeks straight.

1929 – American bluegrass musician Jesse McReynolds was born on this day July 9 in Coeburn, Virginia. Best known as one half of the sibling duo Jim and Jesse.
