On this day July 20 in 1956 – Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers hit No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Why Do Fools Fall in Love’ for the first of three consecutive weeks.
1957 – Britain’s first teen idol and rock and roll star Tommy Steele topped the UK Albums chart with the soundtrack for the movie ‘The Tommy Steele Story’ in which he starrs.
1961 – With their rendition of ‘Temptation’, the Everly Brothers started a two-week stint at number one in the UK on this day July 20 in music history.
1963 – Pop rock duo Jan and Dean topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Surf City’. The song was written by Brian Wilson and Jan Berry, and it’s the first chart-topping surf song.

2021 – American songwriter and vocalist Charles Edward Weiss died at the age of 76.

1943 – English bassist, singer and songwriter John Lodge was born in Birmingham. He rose to fame as a member of the band The Moody Blues with whom he was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.

1947 – Guitarist and founder of the rock band Santana, Carlos Santana was born in Autlan, Mexico.
1952 – American guitarist and producer John Segall also known professionally as Jay Jay French was born in New York City. He rose to fame as a founding member of the heavy metal band Twisted Sister.
1954 – Bass guitarist and vocalist Michael Anthony was born in Chicago, Illinois. Best known as a member of the hard rock band Van Halen from 1974 until 2006.
