On this day September 28 in 1958 – Pop group The Teddy Bears released ‘To Know Him Is to Love Him’ which became a chart-topper in the US and a No.2 hit in the UK.

1961 – John Leyton went to number one on the UK Singles chart with the controversial teenage tragedy song ‘Johnny Remember Me’ which was banned by the BBC.

1964 – American songwriter and composer Nacio Herb Brown died on this day September 28 in music history, aged 68. Best remembered for writing the film scores for ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and ‘Babes in Arms’.

1967 – The original version of ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’ was released on this day September 28 by Gladys Knight & the Pips.

1968 – Rock band The Rascals topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their greatest hits compilation album ‘Time Peace’.

1968 – With their fourth studio album ‘Bookends’, the folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel went to number one in the UK. Also a chart-topper in the US that year and a No.3 hit in Australia and France.

1991 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day September 28 was ‘Use Your Illusion II’ by Guns N’ Roses.

2015 – American R&B and rock and roll singer Frankie Ford died on this day September 28 at the age of 76. Best remembered for his 1959 hit single ‘Sea Cruise’.

1938 – American soul and R&B singer, songwriter and producer Ben E. King was born in Henderson, North Carolina. Best known for the hit single ‘Stand by Me’.

1946 – British pop and jazz singer Helen Shapiro was born in London, England. Best known for the hit singles ‘You Don’t Know’, ‘Don’t Treat Me Like a Child’, and ‘Walkin’ Back to Happiness’.

1948 – Bass guitarist, piano player and songwriter Danny Weis was born on this day September 28 in Huntington Park, California. He came to prominence as a founding member of the bands Iron Butterfly, and Rhinoceros.

1950 – English drummer Paul Burgess was born in Manchester. Best known for his work with bands such as Jethro Tull, 10cc, Magna Carta, and The Icicle Works.

1951 – Singer-songwriter Jim Diamond was born on this day September 28 in Glasgow, Scotland. He rose to fame as the lead singer of the band PhD before embarking on a solo career.
