On this day September 28 in 1958 – Pop group The Teddy Bears released ‘To Know Him Is to Love Him’ which became a chart-topper in the US and a No.2 hit in the UK.
1961 – John Leyton went to number one on the UK Singles chart with the controversial teenage tragedy song ‘Johnny Remember Me’ which was banned by the BBC.
1964 – American songwriter and composer Nacio Herb Brown died on this day September 28 in music history, aged 68. Best remembered for writing the film scores for ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and ‘Babes in Arms’.
1967 – The original version of ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’ was released on this day September 28 by Gladys Knight & the Pips.
1968 – Rock band The Rascals topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their greatest hits compilation album ‘Time Peace’.

1946 – British pop and jazz singer Helen Shapiro was born in London, England. Best known for the hit singles ‘You Don’t Know’, ‘Don’t Treat Me Like a Child’, and ‘Walkin’ Back to Happiness’.
1948 – Bass guitarist, piano player and songwriter Danny Weis was born on this day September 28 in Huntington Park, California. He came to prominence as a founding member of the bands Iron Butterfly, and Rhinoceros.
