On this day September 27 in 1964 – The Beach Boys appeared for the first time on US TV. They performed ‘I Get Around’ and ‘Wendy’ on the Ed Sullivan Show.

1975 – After a three-week break from the top spot, Jefferson Starship returned to No.1 on the US Billboard 200 with their second studio album ‘Red Octopus’.

1975 – Country-folk music singer-songwriter John Denver topped the US Singles chart with ‘I’m Sorry’.

1976 – Ringo Starr released his fifth solo studio album ‘Ringo’s Rotogravure’ through Atlantic Records in the United States. It performed poorly but its the last album on which all four former Beatles members featured on.

1979 – Scottish musician Jimmy McCulloch died of an overdose, aged 26. Best remembered for his work with Paul McCartney and Wings, One in a Million, Thunderclap Newman, and Stone the Crows.

1980 – Rock band The Police started a six-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Don’t Stand So Close to Me’. It became a chart-topper in Spain and Ireland as well.

2008 – Heavy metal band Metallica started a three-week at number one on the US Billboard 200 with their ninth studio album ‘Death Magnetic’. The album was a big international hit and it topped the charts in 23 other countries worldwide.
