On this day September 10 in 1954 – Kitty Kallen topped the UK Singles chart with ‘Little Things Mean a Lot’. A week earlier she was also at No.1 in the US with the same song.
1960 – German orchestra 101 Strings had the number one album in the UK with ‘Down Drury Lane to Memory Lane’.
1964 – With ‘You Really Got Me’, The Kinks went to number one in the UK on this day September 10 in music history. The song was a hit in North America as well, peaking at No.7 in the US and No.4 in Canada.
1966 – The Beatles started a six-week run at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart with their seventh studio album ‘Revolver’. The album also reached No.1 in the UK, West Germany, Australia, Finland, and Sweden.
1966 – The Supremes topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’. Sixteen years later in 1982, the song became a chart-topping hit for Phil Collins.
1970 – B.B. King played a show at Cook County Jail in Chicago for inmates on this day September 10. The concert was recorded and later released as a live album in January 1971 titled ‘Live in Cook County Jail’.

1988 – With his rendition of ‘A Groovy Kind of Love’, Phil Collins topped the UK Singles chart. The song featured in the romantic comedy film ‘Buster’ in which he starred.
1988 – Hard rock band Guns N’ Roses scored their first and only number one single in the US with ‘Sweet Child o’Mine’.
1988 – The Beach Boys went to number one in the UK with their compilation album ‘The Very Best of the Beach Boys’. The album features twelve of their biggest hits up till then.
1991 – Grunge band Nirvana released their now-signature song ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ through DGC Records. It became the band’s biggest hit and it topped the charts in New Zealand, Spain, France, and Belgium.
1994 – With their debut studio album ‘Definitely Maybe’, rock band Oasis reached number one in the UK on this day September 10.
2005 – Pop rock band McFly scored their second number one album in the UK with ‘Wonderland’. By doing so they set the record for the youngest band to top the chart twice.

2005 – American singer and multi-instrumentalist Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown died at the age of 81. Best remembered for his Grammy Award-winning album ‘Alright Again!’.

2015 – Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd hit No.1 for the first time on the UK Albums chart with ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’.
2016 – With his second studio album ‘Blonde’, R&B singer Frank Ocean went to number one in the US on this day September 10 in music history. The album was an international hit that year and it topped the charts in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK as well.
2020 – English rapper Leon Freckleton also known professionally as Nines went to No.1 in the UK with his third studio album ‘Crabs in a Bucket’.
2021 – English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Chapman died on this day September 10 at the age of 80.

1942 – Irish-American singer and songwriter Daniel “Danny” Hutton was born in Buncrana, Ireland. Best known as the co-lead vocalist of the band Three Dog Night.
1945 – Puerto Rican musician and composer Jose Feliciano was born on this day September 10 in Lares. Best known for the Christmas single ‘Feliz Navidad’ and his rendition of ‘Light My Fire’.
1946 – Founding member and drummer of the influential glam rock band Slade, Donald “Don’ Powell was born in Bilston, England.
