On this day September 6 in 1967 – With ‘The Last Waltz’Engelbert Humperdinck started a five-week run at number one on the UK singles chart.

1968 – The Beatles finished recording George Harrison‘s song ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. Although he wasn’t credited, Eric Clapton played lead guitar on it.

1969 – Rock band Jethro Tull scored their first number one album in the United Kingdom with ‘Stand Up’ on this day September 6.

1975 – Rock band Jefferson Starship scored their first No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart with their second studio album ‘Red Octopus’.

1975 – With his rendition of the Sutherland Brothers song ‘Sailing’Rod Stewart topped the UK Singles chart. Also a chart-topper in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway that year.

1975 – Glen Campbell topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ on this day September 6 in music history.

1978 – American record producer Thomas Wilson did at the age of 47 of a heart attack. Best remembered for his work with the likes of Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention, and others.

1980 – Diana Ross scored her fourth solo number one single in the United States with ‘Upside Down’ which topped the Hot 100 chart for four consecutive weeks. The single was also an international hit that year and it reached No.1 in nine other countries.

1980 – The mod revival/punk rock band The Jam scored their second consecutive number one single in the United Kingdom with ‘Start!’.

1986 – With their rendition of the Shocking Blue song ‘Venus’Bananarama topped the US singles chart on this day September 6.

1989 – American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Lenny Kravitz released his debut studio album ‘Let Love Rule’ through Virgin Records. The album was almost entirely done by Lenny as he wrote and produced all songs and played most of the instruments.

1990 – Founding member and rhythm guitarist of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Thomas “Tom” Fogerty died on this day September 6 in music history, aged 48. He was the older brother of John Fogerty.

1994 – English pianist and organist Nicholas “Nicky” Hopkins died at the age of 50 after a lifelong battle with Crohn’s disease. Best remembered for his work as a session musician and recording with the likes of The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Jefferson Airplane, and many other music giants.

1997 – With their live album ‘The Dance’Fleetwood Mac went to number one in the United States on this day September 6. It features live performances of some of their biggest hits such as ‘The Chain’, ‘Dreams’, ‘Rhiannon’, and others.

2003 – Rappers Nelly, P. Diddy and Murphy Lee were at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Shake Ya Tailfeather’.

2003 – Hard rock band The Darkness started a four-week run at No.1 in the UK with their debut studio album ‘Permission to Land’.

2003 – Elton John topped the UK Singles chart with ‘Are You Ready for Love’ on this day September 6. The song was originally released in 1979 but it was remixed by DJ Ashley Beedle and re-released in 2003.

2003 – Production duo The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo) topped the US Billboard 200 with their compilation album ‘The Neptunes Present…Clones’.

2005 – The Rolling Stones released their twenty-fourth studio album ‘A Bigger Bang’ through Virgin Records. The album was a Top 3 hit in the UK and America, and it topped the charts in ten countries.

2007 – Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti died on this day September 6 in music history at the age of 71.

2008 – With their fourth and final studio release ‘Forth’, alternative rock band The Verve topped the UK Albums chart.

2008 – Rapper T.I. started a three-week run at number one in the US with ‘Whatever You Like’ on this day September 6.

2011 – American record producer, bandleader, arranger, and composer Wardell Quezergue died at the age of 81.

2014 – Taylor Swift topped the US Singles chart with ‘Shake It Off’. The song also reached No.1 in nine other countries, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

2014 – With his fifth studio album ‘Blacc Hollywood’, rapper Wiz Khalifa went to number one in the US on this day September 6 in music history. Also a chart-topper in Canada.

2014 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day was the self-titled debut album by the rock duo Royal Blood.

2018 – The soundtrack album for the musical film of the same name Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! was at No.1 in the UK.

2018 – Benny Blanco, Halsey and Khalid went to number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Eastside’ on this day September 6. Also a chart-topper in Ireland, Lebanon, New Zealand, and Singapore.

2020 – R&B and soul singer Bruce Williamson died at the age of 49. Best remembered as the lead singer of The Temptations.

1940 – English singer-songwriter and actress Yvonne Ann Burgess also known professionally as Jackie Trent was born in Newcastle.

1942 – Jazz rock music trombonist and tuba player David “Dave” Bargeron was born on this day in Athol, Massachusetts. He came to prominence as a member of the band Blood, Sweat & Tears.

1943 – Singer-songwriter, bassist and co-founder of Pink FloydRoger Waters was born in Great Bookham, England on this day September 6 in music history.

1947 – American singer-songwriter and keyboardist Sylvester James Jr. mononymously known as Sylvester  was born in Los Angeles, California.

1948 – Co-founder and lead guitarist of the band Kool & the GangClaydes “Charles” Smith was born on this day September 6 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
