On this day June 13 in 1964 – The Rolling Stones released ‘Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)’ as a single in the US. It became a chart-topper in Belgium and Sweden, and peaked at No.24 on the Hot 100.
1964 – Louis Armstrong and His All Stars started a six-week stint at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart with their album ‘Hello, Dolly!’.
1969 – Pink Floyd released their third album ‘More’ which also served as the soundtrack for the film of the same name. This was their first LP without co-founder and leader Syd Barrett. The album peaked at No.9 in the UK.
1970 – With ‘In the Summertime’, rock group Mungo Jerry started a seven-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart on this day June 13 in music history.
1970 – British rock band Uriah Heep released their debut studio album ‘…Very ‘Eavy …Very ‘Umble’. The album is considered an early classic of the heavy metal genre.
1970 – The Beatles topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘The Long and Winding Road’ / ‘For You Blue’. This was the band’s 20th and last number one single on the chart. They also started a four-week stint at No.1 on the Billboard 200 on this day June 13 with their twelfth and final studio album ‘Let It Be’.
1972 – American R&B and soul singer Clyde McPhatter died in his sleep at the age of 39. Best remembered for his work with Billy Ward and his Dominoes and for founding The Drifters.
1981 – Singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson started a two-week stint at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘Being with You’ on this day June 13.
1986 – American jazz clarinetist and bandleader Benjamin “Benny” Goodman nicknamed the King of Swing died at the age of 77.
1987 – The No.1 single in the United States on this day June 13 in music history was ‘Always’ by the R&B group Atlantic Starr. Their only chart-topper.
1987 – Whitney Houston hit number one in the UK with her second studio album ‘Whitney’ for the first of six weeks straight. The album was a big hit worldwide that year and it also reached the top spot in twelve other countries.
1992 – With his debut studio album ‘Some Gave All’, Billy Ray Cyrus hit number one in the USA on this day June 13 for the first of seventeen consecutive weeks.
1992 – Synth-pop duo Erasure scored their first and only No.1 single in the UK with their extended play (EP) medley ‘Abba-esque’ which is a remix of five ABBA songs.
1995 – Singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette released her third studio album ‘Jagged Little Pill’ on this day June 13. The album was a big commercial success and it went to number one in thirteen countries. As of June 2024, it has sold over 33 million copies worldwide.
1998 – The soundtrack album to the film ‘City of Angels’ starring Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage went to number one in the US. It features songs by the likes of Eric Clapton, U2, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette, Goo Goo Dolls, etc.
2009 – Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini topped the UK Albums chart for the first time with his second studio release ‘Sunny Side Up’ on this day June 13 in music history.
2010 – American country music singer, TV host and actor Jimmy Dean died at the age of 81. Best remembered for his chart-topping hit single ‘Big Bad John’.
2015 – Indie rock band Florence and the Machine scored their third number one album in the UK on this day June 13 with ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’.
2015 – Rapper ASAP Rocky scored his second consecutive chart-topper on the US Billboard 200 with his album ‘At. Long.Last.ASAP’.
2018 – American drummer Dominic Joseph “DJ” Fontana died on this day June 13, aged 87. Best remembered for his longtime collaboration with Elvis Presley.
2020 – Singer and songwriter Lady Gaga scored her sixth consecutive number one album on the US Billboard 200 chart with ‘Chromatica’.
2020 – With ‘Rockstar’, rappers DaBaby and Roddy Ricch went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first of two weeks on this day June 13.

1905 – American jazz trumpeter, singer, and bandleader Doc Cheatham was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He is also the grandfather of fellow jazz musician Theo Croker.
1934 – American drummer Uriel Jones was born in Detroit, Michigan. Best known for playing with the Motown in-house studio band the Funk Brothers in the 1960s and 70s.
1940 – American multi-genre singer Robert “Bobby” Freeman was born in California. Best known for his two Top 10 hit singles ‘Do You Want to Dance’ and ‘C’mon and Swim’.
1941 – Guitarist and songwriter Marvin “Marv” Tarplin was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He rose to fame as a founding member of the R&B vocal group The Miracles.
1949 – American singer and guitarist Dennis Locorriere was born in New Jersey. Best known as the lead vocalist of the soft rock band Dr. Hook.
1951 – Mexican guitarist Guillermo “Jorge” Santana was born in Jalisco, Mexico. Best known as a member of the Latin-rock band Malo and for his solo work. He’s also the brother of fellow guitarist Carlos Santana.
1951 – Multi-instrumentalist and record producer Howard Leese was born in Hollywood, California. Best known for his work with Heart, Bad Company and Paul Rodgers.
1952 – American guitarist and vocalist Russell Javors was born in Brooklyn, New York. Best known for his work with Billy Joel from 1976 until 1989.
1963 – Founding member and bassist of the pop rock band Smash Mouth, Paul De Lisle was born in Ontario, Canada.
1963 – Guitarist Robbie Merrill was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Best known as a founding member of the rock bands Godsmack and Another Animal.
1968 – British singer-songwriter David Gray was born in Sale, England. He rose to fame with his debut studio album ‘White Ladder’ which is one of the best-selling records of the 21st century in the UK.
1969 – Danish singer, songwriter and producer Soren Rasted was born in Blovstrod, Denmark. Best known as a member of the Eurodance group Aqua who had the worldwide hit ‘Barbie Girl’.
1970 – Co-founder and frontman of the rock band Weezer, Rivers Cuomo was born in New York City.
1985 – Singer and founding member of the boy band B2K, De’Mario Monte Thornton also known as Raz-B was born in Cleveland, Ohio.
