EVENTS ON JUNE 1 IN MUSIC HISTORY

On this day June 1 in 1957 – Sam Cooke recorded ‘You Send Me’ at Radio Recorders studio. It was released as a single on September 7 and it topped the US Pop Singles chart later that year.

1959 – Johnny Horton hit No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘The Battle of New Orleans’ for the first of six consecutive weeks. The song also topped the singles charts in Canada and Australia that year.

1961 – Elvis Presley started a four-week stint at No.1 on the UK Singles chart with ‘Surrender’ on this day June 1 in music history. It was a chart-topper in the US and Belgium as well.

1963 – Seventeen-year-old Lesley Gore topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘It’s My Party’. The song was an international hit and it  also reached No.1 in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand while in the UK it peaked at No.9.

1967 – David Bowie released his eponymous debut studio album on this day June 1 via Deram Records. The album was received positively by the music critics but it didn’t fare well commercially as it lacked promotion.

1972 – Rock band the Eagles released their self-titled debut studio album on this day June 1 on Asylum Records. It went on to sell over 1 million copies and it peaked at No.22 on the Billboard 200.

1972 – The “Queen of Soul”Aretha Franklin released her live album ‘Amazing Grace’. The album was recorded at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles on January 13-14. It sold over 2 million copies.

1975 – Ronnie Wood celebrated his 28th birthday by playing live for the first time with his new band The Rolling Stones at a show in Louisiana on this day June 1 in music history.
