On this day July 5 in 1954 – Nineteen-year-old Elvis Presley recorded his rendition of ‘That’s All Right’ which was released as his debut single two-weeks later on July 19.

1969 – Rock group The Who released ‘I’m Free’ as a single. The song featured on their fourth studio and double album ‘Tommy’.

1974 – Linda Ronstadt recorded her rendition of Dee Warwick‘s song ‘You’re No Good’ on this day July 5 in music history. It was released as a single on November 19 and it hit No.1 in the US and peaked at No.2 in Canada.

1975 – Sibling pop duo The Carpenters started a two-week run at number one in the UK with their sixth studio album ‘Horizon’.

1980 – With their fifteenth studio album ‘Emotional Rescue’The Rolling Stones topped the UK Albums chart on this day July 5.

1983 – Hardcore punk band Suicidal Tendencies released their self-titled debut studio album through Frontier Records. The album became one of the best-selling punk records of all time and it influenced the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax.

1986 – Janet Jackson reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart with her third studio album ‘Control’ on this day July 5. It also topped the South African albums chart while in the UK it peaked at No.8.

1986 – Billy Ocean topped the US Singles chart with ‘There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)’. The song also became a chart-topper in Canada.

1992 – Canadian guitarist Paul Hackman died on this day July 5 in music history, aged 38 in a car accident. He rose to fame as a member of the rock band Helix.

1993 – Icelandic singer and songwriter Bjork released her first solo studio album ‘Debut’. The album reached No.3 in the UK and peaked at No.61 on the US Billboard 200.

1994 – Rock band Hootie & the Blowfish released their debut studio album ‘Cracked Rear View’ on this day July 5. The LP went to No.1 in the US and Canada, and it became one of the best-selling albums of all time with over 20 million copies sold worldwide.

1997 – American singer Elva Miller better known by her stage name Mrs. Miller died at the age of 89. Best remembered for her renditions of the songs ‘Moon River’, ‘A Lover’s Concerto’, and ‘Monday, Monday’ among others.

2001 – R&B singer Ernest Kador also known professionally as Ernie K-Doe died on this day July 5, aged 68. Best remembered for his 1961 chart-topping single ‘Mother-in-Law’.

2003 – R&B singer Beyonce hit No.1 on the UK Albums chart with her debut solo studio LP ‘Dangerously in Love’ for the first of five consecutive weeks.

2003 – With her fourth studio album ‘After the Storm’Monica went to number one in the US on this day July 5 in music history.

2005 – American R&B singer Shirley Goodman died on this day at the age of 69. Best remembered as one half of the music duo Shirley and Lee, and for her chart-topping single ‘Shame, Shame, Shame’.

2008 – The number one single in the United Kingdom on this day July 5 was ‘Closer’ by the R&B artist Ne-Yo.

2008 – Coldplay started a two-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart with their fourth studio album ‘Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends’. The album became a chart-topper in over 20 countries, sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, and won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

2008 – With ‘I Kissed a Girl’Katy Perry hit number one in the US for the first of seven weeks straight on this day July 5. The song was a chart-topper in sixteen countries that year.

1912 – American songwriter and lyricist Mack David was born in New York on this day July 5 in music history. Best known for his work in film and TV, particularly with Disney on movies like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Cinderella’. He’s also the older brother of lyricist Hal David.

1913 – American R&B singer and guitarist Overton Amos Lemons also known professionally as Smiley Lewis was born in DeQuincy, Louisiana.

1941 – American singer-songwriter and record producer Terry Cashman was born Dennis Minogue on this day July 5 in New York City. Best known for his hit song ‘Talkin’ Baseball’.

1943 – Canadian singer, songwriter and guitarist Robbie Robertson was born on this day in Toronto, Ontario. He rose to fame as the lead guitarist and songwriter for The Band before embarking on a solo career.

1945 – English singer Andrew “Andy” Ellison was born on this day July 5 in London. Best known as the frontman of bands such as Radio Stars, John’s Children, and Jet.

1950 – Singer-songwriter and frontman of Huey Lewis and the NewsHuey Lewis was born Hugh Cregg in New York City.
