On this day January 30 in 1953 – With ‘Outside of Heaven’, Eddie Fisher became the fourth artist to top the newly formed UK Singles chart.
1959 – Elvis Presley went to number one in the UK with the double A-side single ‘One Night’/’I Got Stung’. The single was reissued 46 years later in 2005 and it became a chart-topper for the second time in Britain.
1961 – Girl group The Shirelles started a two-week stint at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ on this day January 30 in music history.
1964 – With their rendition of ‘Needles and Pins’, The Searchers hit number one on the UK Singles chart for the first of three weeks. The song reached No.1 in South Africa and Ireland that year as well, while in the US it peaked at No.13.
1968 – Bobby Goldsboro recorded the Bobby Russell penned song ‘Honey’ on this day January 30. The single was released on February 17 and it sold over 1 million copies in its first month. It also topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for fives weeks that year.
1969 – The Beatles played their famous Rooftop Concert on this day in London. The fab four performed for 40 minutes on the rooftop of their Apple Corps HQ before the police showed up and shut down the event. This was also the band’s last public performance.
