On this day December 29 in 1960 – With ‘I Love You’, Cliff Richard & The Shadows started a two-week run at the top of the UK Singles chart.
1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their debut TV appearance when they performed ‘Hey Joe’ on the British music program Top of The Pops.
1967 – Singer and guitarist Dave Mason left the rock band Traffic on this day December 29 in order to pursue a solo career. He was one of the founding members of the band.
1973 – Three months after his tragic death, Jim Croce reached No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Time In A Bottle’. The song also became a chart-topper in Canada.
1980 – Folk and blues singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Timothy “Tim” Hardin died on this day December 29 in music history, aged 39 from a heroin overdose. Best remembered for the songs ‘If I Were a Carpenter’ and ‘Reason to Believe’.

2007 – The winner of the fourth series of The X Factor – Leon Jackson hit number one on the UK Singles chart with his rendition of ‘When You Believe’ for the first of three consecutive weeks.
2008 – American jazz trumpeter Frederick “Freddie” Hubbard died on this day December 29 at the age of 70.
2012 – With her debut studio album ‘Our Version of Events’, Scottish singer Emeli Sande reached number one on the UK Albums chart on this day December 29 in music history.
2012 – After a one-week break from the top, James Arthur returned for a three-week stint at number one on the UK Singles chart with his rendition of ‘Impossible’. The song was an international hit and it also reached No.1 in the Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, and Slovakia.
2013 – American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Benjamin Curtis died on this day December 29, aged 35. Best known as a member of rock bands UFOFU, School of Seven Bells, and Secret Machines.
2018 – With his second studio album ‘Dying to Live’, American rapper Kodak Black reached the top spot on the US Billboard 200 chart.

1939 – Country music singer-songwriter and actor William Ed Bruce was born in Keiser, Arkansas. Best known for the hit songs ‘You’re the Best Break This Old Heart Ever Had’,and ‘You’re the Best Break This Old Hear Ever Had’.
1941 – British multi-instrumentalist and singer Raymond Thomas was born in Stourport, England. Best known as a founding member of the progressive rock band the Moody Blues.
1943 – Founding member, singer-songwriter and bassist of The Band, Richard “Rick” Danko was born in Ontario, Canada.
1946 – British singer and actress Marianne Faithfull was born in London, England. She rose to fame with her rendition of the Keith Richards and Mick Jagger penned song ‘As Tears Go By’.
1947 – British drummer Colin Flooks better known by his stage name Cozy Powell was born in Cirencester, England. Best known for his work with the likes of Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Robert Plant, Brian May, Jeff Beck, Whitesnake, etc.
1951 – Singer-songwriter and actress Yvonne Elliman was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. Best known for her chart-topping singles ‘If I Can’t Have You’ and ‘Hello Stranger’.
1952 – Grammy Award-winning jazz multi-instrumentalist Joseph “Joe” Lovano was born in Cleveland, Ohio.
