EVENTS ON MARCH 10 IN MUSIC HISTORY

On this day March 10 in 1960 – English singer and actor Adam Faith scored his second and last number one single in the UK with ‘Poor Me’.

1962 – With ‘Hey! Baby’Bruce Channel topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. He held the top spot for three consecutive weeks.

1964 Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel recorded ‘The Sound of Silence’ on this day March 10 in music history at the Columbia Records studio in New York. The session was also an audition that earned the duo a deal with the label.

1967 – Aretha Franklin released her tenth studio album ‘I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)’ through Atlantic Records. The LP topped the US R&B Albums chart and peaked at No.2 on the Billboard 200.

1972 – The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded rock band America a Gold Record for their self-titled debut album. The album was a chart-topper in the US and Canada that year.

1977 – A&M Records signed the Sex Pistols on this day March 10. However, it was a decision the record label quickly regretted as the punkers thrashed A&M’s offices and threatened to beat up the director’s good friend. The contract was terminated a week later on March 16.

1978 – Influential punk rock band the Buzzcocks released their debut studio album ‘Another Music in a Different Kitchen’ through United Artists Records.

1979 – With ‘I Will Survive’, Gloria Gaynor started a two-week run at No.1 in the US on this day March 10. The song also became a chart-topper in the UK, Canada, and Ireland.

1984 – British singer Ian Gillan left Black Sabbath to rejoin his old band Deep Purple  who were reuniting after a long hiatus.

1988 – English singer, songwriter, and actor AndrewAndy” Gibb died on this day March 10 in music history, aged 30 from heart failure caused by heavy substance and alcohol abuse. Best remembered for the chart-topping singles ‘Shadow Dancing’, ‘I Just Want to Be Your Everything’, and ‘(Love Is) Thicker Than Water’. He was also the younger brother of the Bee Gees

1997 – American blues and R&B singer LaVern Baker died at the age of 67. Best remember for hit songs such as ‘Jim Dandy’, ‘I Cried a Tear’, and ‘Tweedle Dee’.

2001 – Jamaican reggae musician Shaggy featuring RikRok reached the top spot on the UK Singles chart with ‘It Wasn’t Me’ on this day March 10.

2002 – American jazz organist Shirley Scott nicknamed the ‘Queen of the Organ” died on this day at the age of 67 from heart failure. 

2005 – American singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist Danny Joe Brown died on this day March 10 in music history, aged 53 from complications of diabetes. Best remembered as the lead singer of the southern rock group Molly Hatchet.

2007 – English pop group Take That scored their sixth consecutive and tenth overall number one single in the UK with ‘Shine’.

2007 – With his debut single ‘This Is Why I’m Hot’, rapper Mims topped the US Billboard Hot 100 on this day March 10.

2007 – Rock band Kaiser Chiefs went to number one in the United Kingdom with their second studio album ‘Yours Truly, Angry Mob’.

2008 – The 23rd annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held in New York on this day March 10 in music history. Inductees: Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, Madonna, The Dave Clark Five and The Ventures.

2010 – Pink Floyd won a court case against EMI Records to prevent the label from selling their music as single downloads and ringtones on the internet. Even in their heyday, the band always refused to cut songs to please radio stations because they wanted fans to listen to their full albums, not just parts of it.

2016 – Pop rock band The 1975 hit No.1 in the UK on this day March 10 with their second studio album ‘I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It’.

2017 – With their fourteenth studio album ‘This House Is Not for Sale’, rock band Bon Jovi topped the US Billboard 200.

2017 – American singer, songwriter, and co-founder of the family vocal group Sister Sledge, Joan “Joni” Sledge died on this day March 10 at the age of 60.

1940 – One half of the pop rock duo Jan and Dean, Dean Torrence was born in Los Angeles, California.

1947 – Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and founder of the rock band Boston, Thomas “Tom” Sholz was born in Toledo, Ohio. 

1950 – Scottish drummer Ted McKenna was born in Lennoxtown, Scotland. Best known for his work with the likes of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Rory Gallagher, Ian Gillian, Greg Lake, etc.

1954 – English singer Tina Charles was born Tina Hoskins in London. Best known for her 1976 chart-topping single ‘I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance)’.

1955 – Singer-songwriter, composer, and producer Etterlene “Bunny” DeBarge was born in Detroit, Michigan. Best known as a member of the R&B/soul family group DeBarge.

1962 – Scottish singer, songwriter and record producer Gary Clark was born in Dundee, Scotland. He rose to fame as the frontman of the pop band Danny Wilson.

1963 – American producer and record executive Frederick Jay ‘Rick’ Rubin was born in Long Beach, New York. Best known for his involvement in popularizing hip-hop music.

1963 – Bass guitarist and co-founder of the rock band Pearl Jam, Jeffrey “Jeff” Ament was born in Havre, Montana.

1964 – Swedish singer-songwriter, rapper and DJ Neneh Karlsson also known professionally as Neneh Cherry was born in Stockholm, Sweden.

1966 – Another founding member of the rock band Pearl Jam, drummer Dave Krusen was born in Tacoma, Washington.

1966 – American singer-songwriter and guitarist Edie Brickell was born Dallas, Texas. She’s also the wife of fellow musician Paul Simon.

1973 – Guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist John LeCompt was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He came to prominence as a member of the rock band Evanescence.

1977 – Singer, songwriter, and producer Robin Thicke was born in Los Angeles, California. Best known for his 2013 hit song ‘Blurred Lines’ which is one of the best-selling singles of all time.
