On this day September 30 in 1965 – With his rendition of ‘Tears’Ken Dodd started a five-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart.

1971 – Isaac Hayes released the single ‘Theme from Shaft’ which featured in the crime action film ‘Shaft’. The track won him an Academy Award for Best Original Song and is considered one of the first disco hits.

1972 – A compilation album released by Arcade Records tilted ’20 Fantastic Hits’ was at No.1 in the United Kingdom. It features hit songs by various artists such as Rod Stewart, Slade, Bee Gees, The Osmonds, Vanity Fare, and others.

1972 – David Cassidy went to number one in the United Kingdom with his version of ‘How Can I Be Sure’.

1977 – Singer, guitarist, and one half of the husband-and-wife music duo Les Paul and Mary FordMary Ford died at the age of 53.

1978 – With ‘Kiss You All Over’Exile started a four-week run at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also a chart-topper in Australia and New Zealand that year.

1982 – Bruce Springsteen released his sixth studio album ‘Nebraska’ which features 10 songs recorded as demos on a 4-track recorder. The album sold more than 1 million copies and was a Top 3 hit on six national charts, including the UK and US.

1989 – Tina Turner scored her first solo number one album in the UK with her seventh studio release ‘Foreign Affair’. In Europe the album reached No.1 in ten more countries, while in the US it peaked at No.32.

1995 – Mariah Carey started an eight-week run at number one on the US Singles chart with ‘Fantasy’. It also reached No.1 in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

1995 – Rock band Hootie & the Blowfish returned for the fourth time at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart with their debut studio album ‘Cracked Rear View’. The LP was a chart-topper in Canada and New Zealand as well, and it sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

1995 – Pop band Simply Red started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart with ‘Fairground’ on this day September 30 in music history. Also a chart-topper in Ireland, Scotland, and Italy.

2000 – With their version of Phil Collins‘ song ‘Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)’Mariah Carey and Westlife topped the UK Singles chart.

2000 – Rapper LL Cool J scored his first and only number one album in the United States with his eighth studio release ‘G.O.A.T.’.

2000 – Madonna‘s eighth studio album ‘Music’ climbed to the top spot on the UK Albums chart. The album reached No.1 in over 20 countries worldwide and it earned her a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

2002 – The Rolling Stones released the double compilation album ‘Forty Licks’ that features 40 of their greatest hits up to that point. It was well received and it became a worldwide hit, peaking at No.1 in six countries.

2002 – American jazz pianist Ellis Larkins died at the age of 79. Best remembered for his solo work and collaborations with Ella Fitzgerald and Sonny Stitt.

2003 – American singer, guitarist, and drummer Ronnie Dawson nicknamed The Blond Bomber died at the age of 64.

2006 – With his second studio album ‘FutureSex/LoveSounds’Justin Timberlake started a two-week run at No.1 on the Billboard 200. The album features three chart-topping singles ‘Sexyback, ‘My Love’, and ‘What Goes Around…Comes around’.

2006 – Pop rock band Scissor Sisters scored their second number one album in the United Kingdom with ‘Ta-Dah’.

2011 – American guitarist and songwriter Marvin “Marv” Tarplin died at the age of 70. Best remembered as a founding member of The Miracles.

2017 – The number one album in the US on this day was ‘Life Changes’ by the country pop singer Thomas Rhett.
