On this day September 22 in 1965 – The Supremes began recording ‘I Hear a Symphony’ which later became their sixth number one single in the US.
1966 – American singer Jim Reeves started a five-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart with ‘Distant Drums’. Two years after losing his life in a plane crash.
1969 – Rock group The Band released their second self-titled studio album which later became known as ‘The Brown Album’. It peaked at No.9 on the Billboard 200.
1973 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘Goat’s Head Soup’ by The Rolling Stones.
1973 – After a one week break from the top spot, Marvin Gaye returned to No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Let’s Get It On’.
1973 – Rock band Wizzard scored their second and last number one single in the UK with ‘Angel Fingers (A Teen Ballad)’.
1979 – With his debut solo single ‘Cars’, Gary Numan was at number one in the United Kingdom. The song also peaked at No.1 in Canada and reached No.9 in the US. His debut album ‘The Pleasure Principle’ was also at No.1.
1981 – American composer and lyricist Harry Warren died at the age of 87. Best remembered for winning three Academy Awards with his compositions ‘Lullaby of Broadway’, ‘On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe’, and ‘You’ll Never Know’.
1984 – English musician John Waite went to number one on the Canadian and US Singles charts with ‘Missing You’.
1989 – American composer, lyricist, and songwriter Irving Berlin died at the age of 101. Best remembered as one of the most prolific compositors and songwriters with over 1,500 songs to his name, including classics such as ‘Anything You Can Do ( I Can Do Better)’, ‘White Christmas’, and ‘God Bless America’ among dozens of other hits.
1990 – The Three Tenors returned to No.1 in the UK with their live album ‘Carreras Domingo Pavarotti in Concert. The album was a chart-topper in Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand as well that year.
1995 – Hard rock band AC/DC released thirteenth studio album ‘Ballbreaker’. The album was a commercial success and it reached No.1 in Australia, Finland, and Sweden.
2001 – Heavy metal band System of a Down topped the US Billboard 200 chart with their second studio album ‘Toxicity’. Also a chart-topper in Canada.
2001 – With his rendition of the 1961 hit song ‘Hey! Baby’, Austrian DJ Ötzi went to number one on the UK Singles chart.
2007 – The number one album in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘Graduation’ by Kanye West. The rapper’s third studio album which also reached No.1 in Canada and the US.
2010 – American singer and actor Eddie Fisher died at the age of 82. Best remembered for his dozens of hit songs, including four number one singles.
2012 – Indie pop band The xx scored their first number one album in the UK with their second studio release ‘Coexist’.
2012 – The number one album in the US on this day September 22 was ‘North’ by the rock band Matchbox Twenty. The band’s fourth studio album and the first to reach No.1.
2012 – Irish pop rock band The Script and rapper will.i.am started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK Singles chart with ‘Hall of Fame’.
2016 – With their second studio album ‘Wild World’, indie pop band Bastille went to number one in the UK. The album was also a Top 10 hit in Australia and North America.
2021 – Taylor Swift returned to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’.
2018 – Paul McCartney scored his third solo number one album on the Billboard 200 with ‘Egypt Station’. This was his first chart-topper in the US since ‘Tug of War’ in 1982 and the LP also reached No.1 in Japan, Germany, and Scotland.
2018 – Singer, multi-instrumentalist and one half of the pop rock duo Chas & Dave, Charles Hodges died at the age of 74.

1942 – English musician Mike Patto was born in Cirencester. Best known as the lead singer of the bands Boxer, Patto, and Spooky Tooth.
1943 – American singer, choreographer, dancer, and actress Antonia Christina Basilotta also known as Toni Basil was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Best known for her chart-topping single ‘Mickey’.
1951 – Singer-songwriter David Coverdale was born in Saltburn, England. He rose to fame as the lead singer of Deep Purple before establishing himself as the founder and frontman of the hard rock band Whitesnake.
1953 – Co-founder and lead singer of the pop group Right Said Fred, Richard Fairbrass was born in Kingston upon Thames, England.
1956 – American singer, actress, and author Deborah “Debby” Boone was born on this day September 22 in Hackensack, New Jersey. Best known for her hit songs ‘You Light Up My Life’ and ‘Are You on the Road to Lovin’ Me Again’.
1956 – American singer Rhett Forrester was born in Tucker, Georgia. He came to prominence as the lead singer of the heavy metal band Riot.

1982 – English actress and singer Billie Piper was born in Swindon. Best known as the youngest female artist to top the UK Singles chart when her debut single ‘Because We Want To’ reached No.1 in 1998, aged 15.
1991 – American rapper DeMario DeWayne White better known by his stage name Moneybagg Yo was born in Memphis, Tennessee.
