On this day September 8 in 1957 – Country music singer Bobby Helms known for his hit ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and made his national TV debut.
1962 – With his seventh studio album ‘Pot Luck’, Elvis Presley went to number one in the United Kingdom. In the United States the album peaked at No.4.
1973 – The Allman Brothers Band started a five-week run at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart with their fourth studio album ‘Brothers and Sisters’.
1973 – Marvin Gaye topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with ‘Let’s Get It On’ on this day September 8 in music history.
1979 – Led Zeppelin topped the UK Albums chart with their eighth and final studio album ‘In Through the Out Door’ on this day September 8. It also reached No.1 in Canada, the US, and New Zealand.
1984 – Stevie Wonder started a six-week run at number one on the UK Singles chart with ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’. It was a worldwide hit that topped nearly thirty singles charts.
1987 – Canadian prog rock band Rush released their twelfth studio album ‘Hold Your Fire’ through Anthem Records. The album made the Top 10 in the UK and Canada, and peaked at No.13 in the United States, however it wasn’t as commercially successful as its predecessors.
1989 – American hip hop musician Keith Wiggins also known professionally as Keef Cowboy died on this day September 8, aged 28 of a drug overdose. Best known as a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.
1990 – With his debut solo single ‘Blaze of Glory’, Jon Bon Jovi went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Also a chart-topper in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada that year.
1990 – The Three Tenors went to No.1 in the UK with their live album ‘Carreras Domingo Pavarotti in Concert’ on this day September 8. The album was a chart-topper in Australia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand as well that year.
2001 – Australian singer Kylie Minogue released her single ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’. It became a big international hit and it topped the charts in 40 countries worldwide.

2016 – Jamaican singer-songwriter and producer Cecil Bustamente Campbell also known as Prince Buster died on this day September 8 in music history, aged 78.
2016 – 74-year-old Barbra Streisand topped the UK Albums chart with her thirty-fifth studio album ‘Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway’. The album went to No.1 in Australia and the US as well that year.
2016 – The number one single in the United Kingdom on this day was ‘Closer’ by The Chainsmokers ft. pop singer Halsey. It spent four consecutive weeks at the top.
2017 – American country music singer and songwriter Donald “Don” Williams died on this day September 8, aged 78.
